Respirable Particulate Matter (RPM)

Respirable particulate matter (RPM) refers to a range of substances that remain suspended in the air, and comprise mixtures of organic and inorganic substances. It exists indoors and out of doors, and covers a wide range of sizes. RPM is classified on the basis of its size, which further determines the magnitude of the risk to man . The smaller the size, the higher the possibility the particle may penetrate into the respiratory system. Inhalable particles are generally less than 10µm (PM10). Several irritant effects are associated with exposure to RPM, which, if left uncontrolled, can further result in airways constriction and respiratory illness.

Singapore National Environment Agency recommends that the maximum threshold level for respirable particulate matter should not exceed 150µg/m3 based on “Guidelines for Good Indoor Air Quality in Office Premises”.
